Data Network

Just about every modern telephone system already uses a little bit of VoIP technology, but many are not fully integrated. If you want to transition your entire telephone network to VoIP, you’ll need to do some tweaking on your data network first. Your network should consist of a local area network (LAN) and the internet connection itself (WAN). If you are adding voice-ready support, you’ll need to accommodate that extra data and make sure it has an easy passage. To have a voice-ready network, you need to add:

  • Routers: Most routers are already voice-ready, but you should check with your carrier to see if any changes need to be made for easy voice transmission. If you have an old router without voice-ready support, you may need to upgrade and replace it altogether.
  • Firewalls: Firewalls can be a big stumbling block when making your network voice-ready. Firewalls work by keeping data outside of your network unless you specifically select it to pass through. Your firewalls will need to be adjusted so that incoming VoIP traffic can easily pass through. Without this adjustment, you won’t be able to receive phone calls or properly chat on the phone.
  • Ethernet Switches: These are almost always voice-ready as they are, but you should make sure that they have enough external power to support their additional responsibility.

Last but not least, make sure that your preferred applications are voice-ready as well. Your workers should be able to talk on the phone using your VoIP system and access their required applications at the same time.
